Obituary

Donald "Wayne" Smith

September 23, 1942 – June 6, 2026

Donald "Wayne" Smith, 83, of Marianna, PA, passed away on June 6, 2026, at UPMC Greene Hospital.

Born in Washington, PA, on September 23, 1942, Wayne was a son of the late Merle F. Smith Sr. and Nellie Booth Smith. He graduated from Bethlehem-Center High School in 1960, and on May 29, 1965, he married Marjorie Miller in the Marianna First Christian Church, where the two of them were longtime members.

Carpentry was Wayne's life's work. He learned the trade as a young man alongside his grandfather in the family business, S.H. Smith & Son of Marianna, went on to work for his father's company, Merle Smith Sr. & Sons, and spent the final 31 years of his career running his own business, D.W. Smith Building & Remodeling. A proud veteran, he also served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 28th Infantry Division, rising to the rank of E-5 before his honorable discharge in 1970.

Outside of work, Wayne loved being outdoors—tending his yard, hunting, bowling, and traveling to the beach with his family. His love for his wife and extended family ran deep, and he was always ready to lend a hand, a bit of wisdom, or a tool to friends and family alike. He was a member of the Marianna Lyceum & Bowling League, a lifelong member of the NRA, a member of the F&AM Sunset Lodge #237 for 55 years, and a member of both the Waynesburg Moose Lodge and the Marianna Field and Stream Club.

In addition to his wife, Wayne is survived by his daughter, Shani Smith (Wade Smith) of Marianna, PA; his grandchildren, Daniel and Kelsey Smith; his sister, Donna Mercante (Tony); and his daughter-in-law, Nola C. Smith; along with several nieces and nephews and the many coworkers he considered family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Wayne Alan Smith, and his brother, Merle F. Smith Jr.

At his request, all funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home Ltd., 2830 Main St., Beallsville, PA.
