Norman Duane Young, known by his family and friends as Norm, passed away on August 29, 2023 in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 84.  Norman was born on October 22, 1938 in Long Beach, California to Myrtle (Hoenes) Young and Cleland Fay Young. Norm was two years old when he lost his father, a U.S. Naval Chief Warrant Officer.  After several moves across the country, Norm was raised by his mother in Washington, D.C.  Norm graduated from Anacostia High School in 1956 and attended Valparaiso University, where he was a member of Delta Theta Phi law fraternity.  He joined the Air Force Reserves, where he received the American Spirit Honor Medal in 1960 for Honor, Initiative, Loyalty, and High Example to Comrades in Arms.   He transferred to American University in Washington, D.C. and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration.

Following Norm's college graduation in 1962, he was recruited to work for the Department of Defense (DOD) as a Computer Programmer before the era of Personal Computers and the Internet.  It was here where he met his wife of 59 years, Annette Marie Gaste, originally from Richeyville, PA.  Norm and Annette were married in the Daisytown Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania.  Both Norm and Annette were sent by the DOD to work in Okinawa where Norm received several awards and certificates of commendation for his work.

Upon his return to the Washington, D.C. area, Norm participated in community activities and served on several Homeowners Association Boards and Committees over the years.   In 1970, he purchased his first of three sailboats.   Norm and his family began sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and he discovered his passion for the sport, which carried well into his retirement.  Norm also enjoyed playing Chess, Poker, and Bridge, and was an avid reader throughout his lifetime.   After moving to Texas, Norm joined the Longhorn Foundation and purchased season tickets to support Longhorn football for over 20 seasons.

Norm had a long and successful career in Information Management Systems (IMS) that spanned over 38 years.  He worked in the IMS field as a Programmer, Manager, Director, and Consultant.  He was responsible for the design, development, coding, implementation, installation, and management of a wide variety of data processing systems, including software and hardware.  He was employed by the DOD, Computer Sciences Corporation, the House Information Systems at the U.S. House of Representatives, Arthur Young & Company, Valero Energy Corporation, the Texas Legislative Council and Unisys Corporation.  He worked primarily with clients in Federal and State governments that included the AEC, OSHA, ERDA, NIH, TEA, and Universal Paper Inc.

Norm and Annette designed and built their retirement home in the Albemarle Plantation (Hertford, NC) and retired there in 2006.  They enjoyed sailing, golfing and numerous social groups with friends and neighbors.  Norm was an active member of both the Osprey Yacht Club (OYC) and the United States Power Squadron (USPS), serving as Education Officer for both organizations in NC.  He was also a member of the Hampton Yacht Club (HYC) in VA.  Norm assisted with teaching children how to sail Optimist ("Opti") boats as part of a Summer Camp.  For many years, Norm and Annette chaired the annual Waterway Pride Day to clean up the Sound Golf Links waterfront.  Norm volunteered to help restore the historic Periauger boat in Hertford, a true treasure of North Carolina.  He also enjoyed marksmanship, and was a founding member of the North Carolina Shooting Club in Hertford.   Norm was an active member and served on the Vestry at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hertford.

Norm looked forward to visits from his daughter Victoria's family.  He especially enjoyed taking Austin, his grandson, to the beaches on the Outer Banks, the numerous lighthouses along the North Carolina coast, the local museums and historical markers, and to the famous Dismal Swamp. In the Summer of 2022, Norman and Annette relocated to The Tribute neighborhood in The Colony, Texas to be closer to Victoria's family in Frisco.

Norm was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer in June of 2023.  Two months later he died within days of entering hospice, with his wife by his side.  Norman is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Annette Gaste Young, daughter Victoria Young Nordquist, son-in-law Jeffrey Nordquist, grandson Austin Nordquist, granddaughters by marriage Sienna Nordquist and Capria Nordquist Curtin (Drew), sister-in-law Michele Nardizzi, niece Christine Longood (Ross) and niece and Goddaughter Nicole Pomeroy (Scott) and their families, and several cousins.

Norm was kind, considerate, hardworking, pleasant, easy to talk to, patient, and a good listener.  He was labeled a true gentleman by many of his friends and relatives.  He loved his family and valued spending time with them.  Norm kept his ironic sense of humor to the very end.  He was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00am in the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main St., Beallsville, PA 15313 with Rev. Andy Scott officiating. A private graveside interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norm's memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
