Mary Elaine Lozosky, a lifelong resident of Daisytown, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in her home Friday, May 17, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer.

Mary Elaine was born June 3, 1942 in Daisytown to parents, John Louis Lozosky and

Helen Timko Lozosky.

She was a graduate of California High School, class of 1960. In 1963, she received her

bachelor's degree from the then California State College. In 1967, upon acceptance of

her thesis, " Assimilation of the Polish, Slovakian, and Hungarian ethnic groups of

Daisytown, Pennsylvania" a master's degree in education was granted.

After graduating from college, Mary Elaine was hired as a social studies teacher at

Burgettstown Jr/Sr High School. She retired in 2001 after 38 years of teaching. During

her tenure, she positively influenced generations of students, imparting lessons in

citizenship and democracy. She also led an active Student Council as faculty advisor for

all 38 years. Each summer, as director of the statewide Pennsylvania Association of

Student Council leadership workshop held at Grove City College, she devoted herself to

building future leaders among Pennsylvania's teens, fostering those skills necessary to

successfully lead a company, a classroom, or a family.

Mary Elaine was a lifelong learner and doer. After retirement she became the Education Coordinator for the Center in the Woods, whose mission

is to provide the highest quality of life for older adults in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The attractive programs she

offered reached adults and their families living in 90 communities over 5 counties. Ever

both a teacher and a student, it was from one of these programs she learned to paint

and eventually became a prolific and award winning artist, showing her work at a yearly

art show hosted by the Valley Art Club, of which she was a member.

Mary Elaine was a historian and genealogist. She authored two books celebrating the

history of the coal patch town that was her lifelong home: Daisy of a Town, 2003,

Daisies, Dignity and Daily Life, 2004. Mary Elaine is also known in her community for

her gaggle of geese that live next to the creek on Pike Run Drive.

Mary Elaine was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Daisytown. As an

active participant in the life of the church she served the parish on various committees

and as a long-time lector. She was the author of History of St. Mary's Daisytown. Upon

the closing of St. Mary Church she joined St. Katherine Drexel Parish.

Mary Elaine loved to travel and visited over 33 countries in the last 32 years. Her travels often inspired her paintings. Some of the highlights of her travels were seeing

Parthenon in Greece, visiting Vilnius, her ancestral home in Poland (now Lithuania), and

going on safari in Botswana.

She is survived by her brother Dr. John Patrick (Cathy) Lozosky, niece Rachel Lozosky

Esq. (John Paul Friedmann Esq.), nephews Jonathan (Emily) Lozosky, and children

Eliza, Elin, and Beau, Jordan (Sarah) Lozosky and son, Jakob; and many dearly

devoted friends including Mary Hart, whose love and care during this period of illness

made all the difference.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 8 PM in the John B. Greenlee Funeral

Home, Ltd., 2830 Main St. Beallsville, PA 15313 where prayers will be offered Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian

Burial at 10 AM at St. Katharine Drexel Parish Richeyville Campus with Rev. Michael Zavage officiating. Interment will follow  in Mt. Calvary

Cemetery, Coal Center, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Washington County Community Foundation, 1253 Route

519, PO Box 308, Eighty Four, PA 15330 or www.wccf.net. These contributions will support the Mary Elaine Lozosky Distinguished Service

Award for Citizenship. Through her efforts, this scholarship was funded and awarded to a graduating senior at Burgettstown Middle/High School

for many years. The scholarship was recently renamed in her honor.
