Kathryn Sell Chillingworth - Cappy

Born in Charleston, WV, on September 13, 1937, Kathryn lived a life defined by curiosity, warmth, and a deep love for family. A proud graduate of West Virginia University, she carried her Mountaineer spirit with her throughout her life, valuing education not simply as an achievement, but as a lifelong pursuit.

She married the love of her life, Peter, and together they built a home filled with learning, laughter, and unwavering support. Their partnership was one of devotion and shared purpose, becoming the foundation of a family that grew to include three beloved children who were the pride and joy of her life.

As a teacher, Kathryn believed in the power of knowledge to transform lives. She approached her classroom with patience, intelligence, and enthusiasm, inspiring countless students not only to learn, but to think, question, and explore. Teaching was not just her profession; it was an extension of who she was.

At heart, she was a lifelong learner and a lover of knowledge in all its forms.

Her passions extended far beyond the classroom. She was an avid reader who almost always had a book in hand, finding joy and inspiration in stories, ideas, and the worlds they opened. Reading was both a private pleasure and one she loved to share. As a longtime member of several book clubs, she treasured the lively discussions and lasting friendships that grew from a mutual love of literature.

She also had a love of music, enjoying concerts by Bob Dylan, the Lilith Fair artists, The Rolling Stones, and many others. She found joy in life's simple pleasures: long, sun-soaked days at the Bell-Vue pool, good conversation, and the comfort of a well-loved cookbook. The Joy of Cooking was more than a cookbook to her—it was a trusted companion, consulted so often it seemed almost sacred. Through her cooking, she created traditions and cherished memories around the family table.

Kathryn also had an undeniable sweet tooth and never passed up an opportunity for ice cream or dessert. Some of her family's happiest memories were summer trips to the Frosty Kiss or Sarris for ice cream, where she delighted in treating everyone. And when the kids declared they were too full to finish, she was always happy to step in and polish off the last few bites, never letting a scoop go to waste.

Evenings often found her cheering on contestants from her living room as a devoted fan of Jeopardy! She delighted in the challenge, the trivia, and the thrill of knowing the answer. It was just one more reflection of her sharp mind and endless curiosity about the world.

Kathryn taught her children not only the value of education but also the joy of lifelong learning. Her legacy lives in the family she nurtured, the students she inspired, and the countless lives she touched.

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Peter; her children, Anne, John (Lynn), and Emily (Jim); her cherished grandchildren, Jack, Hannah, and Tara; and all who were fortunate enough to know and love her. Though she will be deeply missed, the lessons she taught and the love she shared remain an enduring gift.

At her request, her body will be donated to Science through the WVU University and in lieu of a formal funeral, Cappy would want all to play some Rolling Stones or Janis Joplin at volume while enjoying a cold beverage or bowl of ice cream.
