Judith A. "Judie" McCarty, 75 of Scenery Hill, PA passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024 in the Donnell House after a lengthy illness with her sister by her side.
Judie was born on August 20, 1949 in Washington, PA a daughter of the late John V. and Doris Thomas McCarty. She was a 1967 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School. A highly educated woman, Ms. McCarty obtained an undergraduate and Master of Science in Elementary Education from California University of Pennsylvania. She was also proud to be a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority where she built lifelong friendships.
Judie was employed as a teacher at the Bentworth Elementary Center and educated children for 35 years. Early in her career she worked as an Art Teacher. Most of her service was as a homeroom teacher in various primary grades. Judie also transitioned to Instructional Support late in her career. Judie was filled with pride for the school; she had a passion for the Arts, and was Co-Director of Bentworth High School musicals for 10 years. She was proud to have been a member of the teacher planning committee for the building of the elementary center.
Judie was a member of several organizations. She served on the Bentworth school board for 15 years and Old Trails Business and Professional Women for over 40 years, where she held various officer positions. She was a member of the PSEA and NEA. Judie was on the Bentleyville Library Board for multiple years, where she was instrumental in obtaining funds by co-writing over 80 grants.
She was so proud to be called 'Aunt Judie' by her beloved nieces and nephew, as well her great nieces and nephew. An avid reader and sports fan you wouldn't catch her without a book in her hand. She always cheered along for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Steelers. She will be dearly missed by the members of the Beallsville Card Club, and the Thursday Card Club.
Surviving is her sister Janet Wood of Scenery Hill, PA who Judie lived with her last 5 years. Also surviving are nieces and nephew Lisa Osburn, J.D. McCarty, and Amanda Durbin; great nieces and nephew Colton Osburn, Maci McCarty, and Rowan McCarty; brother and sister-in-law Dennis Durbin, and Lois Pitzer (Glen).
Preceding her in death are her sister, and brother Edna M. Durbin who passed in 2005, and V. Thomas McCarty who passed in 2008.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the John B Greenlee Funeral Home Ltd. 2830 Main St. Beallsville, PA 15313 where Funeral Services will be held Wednesday October 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor George Lammay officiating. Interment will follow in the Beallsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to the Bentleyville Public Library 931 Main St. Bentleyville, PA, 15314 or the Concordia Hospice of Washington Donnell House 10 Leet St. Washington, PA, 15301.
