Elizabeth "Betty"
Jane Sckena
Feb 21, 1933 — Oct 4, 2022
On Tuesday, October 4, 2022 our beloved Elizabeth "Betty" (Malik) Sckena went to her heavenly home.
Betty was a proud coal miner's daughter from Marianna, PA born on February 21, 1933. She was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Bacha) Malik and a loving sister to John, Mary Ann, Patrick and baby George all of whom have preceded her in passing.
In 1951 Betty graduated from West Bethlehem High School where she was an honor student and VP of her senior class.
In 1953 she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life Louis Sckena. They were married until his death in November of 1990. They enjoyed a happy life together filled with family, music, travel, gardening and fishing.
Betty loved her family above all else and she was proud of her Slovak heritage. She often shared stories and old family photos with her children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed working in her gardens and canning fresh fruits and vegetables. Her homemade blackberry cobbler and nut rolls were beyond compare.
She loved being outside and always had a deep appreciation of nature and its beauty. Betty hung her laundry on outside clothes lines until she was well into her 80's just so she could bring the smell of fresh air indoors with her clothes and linens. She also enjoyed star gazing and was thrilled by the sight of every new rainbow. No one loved a gorgeous sunset more than she.
Betty lived a full life being a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, aunt and friend.
Anyone who knew her knew of her love for God, family, music, nature, dark chocolate, ice cream and a good book.
She lived a simple and good life for which she was thankful. Betty was a faithful Christian who was humble, kind, generous and loved by many.
She will be forever missed by her daughter LuAnn (Sckena) Shotter and her twin sons Robert and Richard Sckena.
She also leaves many fond memories with her much loved son and daughter in law Renard "Kim" Shotter and Pamela (Yanak) Sckena and her precious grandchildren Michael Shotter, Kimberly Mikolay and her husband Bill, Christopher Sckena and his wife Shana, Justin Sckena and fiancée Amelia Gordon Esq., Dr. Sarah Sckena and Jacob Sckena, step granddaughter Melynda Girdwood her husband Joe and son Joseph.
She was preceded in death by her infant granddaughter Amelia Sckena. In addition she will be greatly missed by her treasured great grandchildren River and Skylar Mikolay, Rudy, Jett and Ellie Sckena. She also leaves behind her step brother George Hagedorn and his wife Pattie who were also her life time neighbors and friends. Affectionately known as Aunt Betty she had many nieces and nephews she loved dearly and who grew up spending many summers and holidays making memories with her and Uncle Lou in their Richeyville home.
Funeral services are private and under the direction of the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, Ltd., 2830 Main St. Beallsville, PA.
